Ethyl (3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)acetate is a primary terminal amine, which can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. The compound is a chain molecule with asymmetric conformations and phenolic groups. It exists as a tautomeric pair, in which the phenolic group of one form is hydrogen bonded to the amine group of the other. This structure stabilizes the molecule and prevents it from undergoing rapid interconversion between these two forms. The crystal structure of ethyl (3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)acetate has been determined by X-ray crystallography.
