N-Palmitoyl-phytosphingosine is a sphingolipid that is found in fungi. It can be produced by chemical methods, such as hexadecanoyl chloride followed by reaction with phytosphingosine, or by extraction from fungus. N-Palmitoyl-phytosphingosine has been detected in the mycelium and fruiting bodies of Armillaria species. It is also found in the cell membranes of some Basidiomycetes and is an important component of ergosterol peroxide (ERGP). ERGP can be synthesized not only by Armillaria species, but also by many other Basidiomycetes, including Cerrena unicolor, Cerrena unispora, and Peniophora penicillata. ERGP decomposes to form nitrogen and hydrogen peroxide, which may help to prevent bacteria from colonizing plant tissues.
