The extract of the leaves of this plant has a potent antibacterial activity against cladosporium cucumerinum. This extract also inhibits the growth of microorganisms such as Cladosporium, Bacillus subtilis, and Micrococcus luteus. It is also active against fungi such as Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The antibacterial activity of the leaf extract is due to its ability to inhibit bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. The leaf extract was also shown to have an antifungal effect on Candida albicans. Spectroscopic studies have revealed that this compound contains an oxygenated heterocyclic ring system with two carbonyl groups at C-9 and C-17 positions.
