Farampator is a drug that is used to treat bowel disease, including inflammatory bowel disease. It is an analog of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor donepezil and has shown dose-dependent effects in clinical trials. Farampator binds to the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) at the synapse, which prevents the breakdown of acetylcholine by inhibiting its hydrolysis by acetylcholinesterase. This prevents synaptic dysfunction and improves cognition in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Farampator also inhibits glutamate release from nerve endings, which may be beneficial for patients with mitochondrial diseases.
