The metal hydroxides of this compound have been found to be toxic in acute tests on rats. 1-(2-Amino-1-p-tolyl-ethyl)-pyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid is used in wastewater treatment and has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as esterases, lipases, and proteases. This compound has also been shown to affect bacterial growth by preventing the synthesis of proteins required for cell division.
