The compound has been shown to inhibit the activity of wild-type and mutant enzymes in vitro. 5-(4-Chlorophenyl)-[3,3'-bipyridine]-6,6'-diamine binds to the active site of serine proteases, competitively inhibiting their function. This inhibition may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms of serine side chains.
