Strontium aluminate is a phosphor that emits light when exposed to heat or mechanical stress. It has been used as a chemical indicator and analytical chemistry model system. Strontium aluminate can be activated by the addition of phosphotungstic acid, which causes the material to emit light in response to mechanical stress. Strontium aluminate is used in analytical chemistry because it can be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of strontium, aluminium, and oxygen. It also has thermal expansion properties that are similar to those of zirconia. The surface properties of this material have been studied using surface methodology such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
