Molybdenum boride is a model system that can be used to study the reaction of silicon and deionized water. Molybdenum boride is fabricated by heating molybdenum and boron nitride particles in the presence of hydrogen fluoride gas. The average particle diameter is controlled by the positioning of the particles during fabrication, which is an important factor when determining how long it takes for the material to react with hydrogen fluoride. The amount of chlorine atoms on the surface affects how reactive the material will be to other chemicals. Molybdenum boride has a high resistance to both heat and corrosive chemicals such as hydrogen fluoride, making it ideal for use in coatings. The reaction between molybdenum boride and hydrogen fluoride releases heat, making it an excellent material for exothermic reactions.
