Chromium carbide is a metal carbide that is used as an industrial abrasive. It can be prepared by the reaction of molybdenum and carbon in a hydrogen atmosphere. The thermal expansion coefficient of chromium carbide is 2.5 times that of iron, making it well suited for use in high-temperature applications. Laser ablation has been used to produce single crystals with few defects and a high degree of purity. Chromium carbides are reactive and can react with water vapor or hydrochloric acid to form chromium hydroxides or chromium chloride, respectively. Chromium carbides have been shown to have excellent electrochemical impedance spectroscopy properties, making them useful for chemical analysis and corrosion prevention in metal processing plants.
