Calcium nitride is a compound that belongs to the group of nitrides. It is made up of calcium and nitrogen atoms and has a chemical formula CaN. Calcium nitride is obtained by heating calcium oxide, boron oxide, and ammonia in an electric furnace. The crystals are hard and brittle with a metallic luster.
Calcium nitride has been shown to have light emission properties when exposed to high-intensity ultraviolet radiation or electron beams. This property can be used in photoelectric photography, as well as for generating light for illumination purposes. Calcium nitride has low thermal expansion coefficients, which means that it does not expand much when heated up or cooled down.
When exposed to water vapor at high temperatures, the material undergoes hydrolysis reactions with the release of hydrogen fluoride gas. These reactions can be used industrially for the production of hydrogen fluoride gas from seawater.
