Nickel chromite is a nickel and chromium oxide mineral that has a constant crystal structure. It has been shown to undergo a phase transition at 810°C, which is the cause of its characteristic metallic luster. Nickel chromite can be found as spherical particles with an irregular morphology or as crystalline grains with a monoclinic crystal structure. FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction reveal that it is composed of NiO and CrO2 phases. The crystal lattice of NiO consists of nickel atoms in tetrahedral coordination, while the lattice of CrO2 consists of chromium ions in octahedral coordination. Nickel chromite is also known for having optical properties such as backscattering, channeling, and UV absorption.
