Gallium telluride is a semiconductor composed of gallium, tellurium and electrons. It has a band gap of about 1 eV, which makes it suitable for infrared spectroscopy. Gallium telluride crystals are anionic because the electron affinity of gallium is greater than that of tellurium. The quadrupole moment also changes with the coordination number, so it can be used to identify the nature of a molecule. The coordination number in gallium telluride is 6, which means that the halogens are tetrahedral and covalently bonded to the semiconductor. The spectroscopy shifts are not sensitive to temperature, making this material stable at high temperatures.
