Strontium nitride is a non-oxide, non-metallic nitride material. It is a white powder that can be used as a coating for steel and other metals to protect them from corrosion. Strontium nitride has been shown to have low toxicity in animal studies, with no observable changes in organ weight or histopathology. The mechanism of the material's corrosion protection is not well understood, but it may be due to the formation of an oxide layer on the surface of the metal substrate. The thermal expansion coefficient of strontium nitride is approximately half that of silicon carbide. Strontium nitride also has red fluorescent properties that are useful in biological applications such as apoptotic gene detection and cell imaging.
