Praseodymium(III) oxide is a chemical compound that belongs to the Praseodymium family. It is an oxide of zirconium and silicon, with a melting point of 2,977 K. The crystal structure has been determined by X-ray crystallography and consists of a cubic lattice with alternating layers of Praseodymium and Zirconium atoms. It has a density of 5.89 g/cm3 and a hardness of 8 on Mohs Scale. Praseodymium(III) oxide is chemically stable at room temperature in air but will react with water or steam to produce hydrogen gas, heat, and praseodymium hydroxide (PrO(OH)). The solubility in water decreases as the temperature increases from 0°C to 100°C.
Praseodymium(III) oxide can be prepared by heating magnesium oxide at high temperatures until it reaches 3,600 K, the reaction
