Thulium(III) oxide is an inorganic compound that has been studied since the late 1950s. It is a powder that can be activated by heating to produce an intense blue luminescence. The optical properties of Thulium(III) oxide are dependent on its particle size and the temperature at which it is heated. It exhibits an unusually high activation energy of about 50 kJ/mol, which may be due to its interaction with silicon. Thulium(III) oxide also has been shown to have a strong interaction with water molecules and ions, which makes it a good candidate for use in photocatalysis applications. One study showed that Thulium(III) oxide can enhance the photoelectron yield from semiconductor surfaces, while another study found that crystallography studies show how Thulium(III) oxide interacts with silicon particles.
