Tungsten(IV) oxide (WO2.9) is a blue sub-oxide that is used in the production of catalysts for the chemical industry. The compound can be made by exposing molybdenum to an oxidizing atmosphere, such as air or oxygen. Tungsten(IV) oxide has been shown to react with water vapor and hydrogen chloride to form hydrochloric acid, which may be due to its ability to undergo nucleophilic attack on carbon atoms. This reaction may also be caused by the presence of hydrogen bonds between the tungsten and oxygen atoms in the compound. Tungsten(IV) oxide has been shown to have a redox potential of -0.5 volts and binding constants of 9.5 x 10 M-1.
