Potassium tetraborate tetrahydrate is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by adsorption to cell walls. It has been shown to be effective in clinical studies for the treatment of infectious diseases and chronic kidney disease. This drug binds to particles, such as proteins, lipids and carbohydrates, by hydrogen bonding. Potassium tetraborate tetrahydrate also has a high surface area and can adsorb a large number of molecules per unit volume. The mechanism of action is not well understood, but it may involve the production of reactive oxygen species that cause oxidative damage in the bacterial cell membrane.
