Lead zirconate is a ferroelectric material that has a cubic crystal structure with an orthorhombic distortion. It can be synthesized by the reaction of lead(II) oxide and zirconium dioxide at high temperatures, in which case it will contain impurities of other materials. Lead zirconate is also known as PZT. The activation energies for the ferroelectric phase transition depend on the temperature and composition of the material. Lead zirconate is used in actuators, such as those in disk drives and speakers, to change their frequency response. Lead zirconate has been studied using analytical methods including X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy studies.
