Basic Yellow 40 is a synthetic, fat-soluble dye that is used to color food, cosmetics, and other products. It is also used in the medical field as an antimicrobial treatment for wounds and burns. Basic Yellow 40 inhibits cholesterol synthesis by competing with the enzyme p450 for access to the substrate. This inhibition leads to a decrease in risk group and highlighting of cholesterol deposits in animals. Basic Yellow 40 has been shown to be an effective polymerization initiator in polymers such as cellulose nitrate and polyvinyl chloride. It also inhibits cell growth and enhances staining properties of dyes by polymerizing monomers into polymers. The additive has been proven to have no adverse effects on fetal heart rate when administered at high doses to pregnant rats. Basic Yellow 40 may be used as a predictive model for fatty acid metabolism due to its ability to inhibit enzymes involved in lipid synthesis.
