Methyl 3-phenyloxirane-2-carboxylate is a fragrance that is used in the cosmetic industry in animal testing and for stress relief. It has been tested for genotoxicity using an assay on human cells. Methyl 3-phenyloxirane-2-carboxylate has also been shown to be mutagenic in bacteria and yeast, with dermal absorption being the most likely route of exposure. This chemical does not appear to be genotoxic in animals, but it is classified as a possible carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
