Description

1-(3-Hydroxypropyl)pyrrolidin-2-one is an organic solvent that can be used as a coolant, stabilizer, and a plasticizer. It is activated by heating to produce polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This polymer can be used in the production of thin films or as a coolant. It also has the ability to dissolve polyhydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol and liquefy these solvents. 1-(3-Hydroxypropyl)pyrrolidin-2-one is produced by the reaction of 3-hydroxypropyl pyrrolidine with formaldehyde. The resulting product has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against Spirulina platensis.
