The microbiocidal properties of 1-chlorotriacontane are due to its ability to form free radicals that damage DNA. The anion in this compound is chlorine, which can be released when 1-chlorotriacontane reacts with amines or other organic molecules. This reaction causes the release of chlorine gas and hydrochloric acid.
