2,3-Dichloro-6-methylaniline is a pyrimidine derivative that inhibits the conversion of ammonia to nitrite. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting the production of nitrate reductase and by binding to sulfhydryl groups in enzymes and proteins. 2,3-Dichloro-6-methylaniline has been shown to inhibit nitrogen fixation and nitrification in soil.
