2,2,3-Tribromobutane is an experimental chemical that has been used in the past as a solvent and refrigerant. It has also been investigated for use as a potential replacement for ozone-depleting substances. 2,2,3-Tribromobutane is used in the synthesis of polyhalogenated alkanes by photobromination of an alkene (RCH=CH) with bromine followed by reaction with hydrogen chloride to produce a dihaloalkane (RCHBr). It can be used to eliminate water vapor from a solution phase or vapor phase reaction equation. The most common application of this chemical is as a solution phase reagent in the preparation of ketones and esters. 2,2,3-Tribromobutane can also be used to tabulate experimental data and generate yields for these experiments.
