Description

5-Formylfuran-3-boronic acid is a novel boronic acid that can be used to synthesize furan and pyrrole derivatives. It has been used to prepare 5-formylpyrrole and 5-formylfuran from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The patent process for this compound is disclosed in Scheme 1. The synthesis of the compound starts with the conversion of chloroacetic acid into an ester, followed by hydrogenation of the ester to yield a methyl ketone. The methyl ketone can then be converted into an acrylate or cyclic acetal, which can then be reacted with a heteroaryl group to produce desired heterocycles.
