2,7-Dibromophenanthrene is a ligand that binds with metals such as nickel and palladium. It has been shown to have optical properties, as well as diffraction and strengthening effects on the temperature dependence of the rate of organic reactions. 2,7-Dibromophenanthrene also has an ability to bind to two bidentate ligands. 2,7-Dibromophenanthrene is used in analytical methods for determining polymer concentrations and in analytical methods for determining chloride concentration. The biphenyl molecule contains a chloride group.
