Description:
This compound is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of biologically active compounds. It is produced by the catalyzed enantioselective reduction of 2-acetoxy-3-oxopyran with palladium on carbon, followed by oxidation to the corresponding ketone. This reaction is stereospecific and produces only one diastereomer. The allylic alcohols are reduced with sodium borohydride in an enantiospecific manner.
