Description

Diethyl (2-methylbenzyl)phosphonate is a crystalline solid that can be synthesized from the reaction of diethyl malonate and methyl 2-chlorobenzoate. It crystallizes in two orientations, with the most stable being monoclinic. The crystal structure of this compound is characterized by a dimerization process mediated by alkenes as well as its electron density maps. Diethyl (2-methylbenzyl)phosphonate has been shown to form photodimerization products when irradiated with light in the presence of oxygen, which may be due to its x-ray diffraction pattern. This compound has also been used for structural analysis of other compounds such as derivatives and modifications.
