Description:

Uric acid is a breakdown product of purines and a byproduct of protein metabolism. It is an important component of animal urine, which contains about 5% uric acid. Uric acid may be used as a biochemical marker for diagnosis and monitoring the progression of different diseases, such as hepatitis. The biosynthesis of uric acid involves the conversion of xanthosine to inorganic phosphate and then to uric acid. This process begins with the conversion of glycerides to l-lysine, which eventually forms xanthosine monophosphate (XMP). XMP is then converted to adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and finally to uric acid. Uric acid can be detected using spectroscopy or visually through its characteristic coloration.
