Arclofenin is a polymeric matrix of alginic acid and fatty acid esters that contains oriented, hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and ionizable components. It is a nutritional supplement that is reconstituted in water with diluents such as sucrose or mannitol. Arclofenin has been shown to be an effective substrate for the uptake of diagnostic agents in muscle cells. The active form of arclofenin is the fatty acid ester, which can be metabolized by conjugation with glucuronic acid. The metabolites are excreted through the urine or bile into the feces. Arclofenin also has a high affinity for cellulose derivatives, which may be due to its ability to bind to hydroxyl groups on the cellulose surface.
