Sch-23390 is a dopamine receptor agonist that binds to the D2 class of dopamine receptors. It is used in animal studies to study the function of dopamine in neurotransmission, locomotor activity, and memory. Sch-23390 also has been shown to increase the production of catecholamines by stimulating the enzyme hydroxylase, which catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine into dopa, and subsequently into dopamine. This drug has been shown to antagonize voltage-dependent calcium channels and can cause a decrease in chloride ion permeability. Sch-23390 maleate is a non-selective antagonist with no significant affinity for other neurotransmitter receptors.
