9-Phenyl-9H-carbazole-3-carboxaldehyde (PCA) is a fluorescent molecule that can be used to monitor the presence of oxygen in the environment. PCA fluoresces when it is exposed to light, and this property has been exploited for a number of applications, including monitoring of oxygen levels in animal health and nature. Functional theory has revealed that PCA's fluorescence is dependent on its oxidation state, which can be manipulated by changing the exposure time or irradiation intensity.
