Valproic Acid-D6 solution is a fatty acid that is used as an anti-epileptic drug. Valproic acid is metabolized through oxidation, glucuronidation and/or sulfation to form valproyl-CoA and other metabolites. Valproic acid can also be converted to its active form, valproate semialdehyde, by the enzyme, liver alcohol dehydrogenase. The concentration of valproic acid in plasma is proportional to the dosage administered and the degree of metabolic conversion. The therapeutic range for plasma concentrations of valproic acid is 50-150 mg/L. Valproic acid has been shown to induce hypersensitivity syndrome in some individuals following exposure to drugs or chemicals that are reactive with this compound. This reaction may be due to carbamazepine, which can undergo a chemical reaction with valproic acid in vivo and form a new compound, carbamazepine epoxide (CBZO). These compounds have been detected
