Description:

5-Chloro-2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid (5CH3MBA) is a plant hormone that regulates the resistance of plants to tobacco mosaic virus and other viruses. 5CH3MBA is a monosubstituted phenolic acid with a hydroxyl group in the 2 position and a chlorine atom in the 5 position. It has been shown to be effective as an antibacterial control agent for plants, as well as an insecticide. This compound also has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain fungi, such as Phytophthora infestans, that infect plants. The chemical structure of this compound was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography. The molecular weight of 5CH3MBA is 248.24 g/mol and its molecular formula is C8H6ClO4.
