Product Information
BRL 52537 hydrochloride is a selective κ-opioid receptor agonist that inhibits the proliferation of human colon cancer cells. It has been shown to inhibit the release of dopamine and to have neuroprotective properties in animal models. BRL 52537 hydrochloride binds to the κ-opioid receptors on the cell membrane, which are involved in pain sensation, regulating mood and control of bowel function. The drug also blocks chloride channels, resulting in an increase in intracellular chloride concentration, which causes a decrease in extracellular potassium concentrations. This leads to a depolarizing effect on neurons and an increase in their signal transduction potential. BRL 52537 hydrochloride is not active against human breast cancer cells or normal human fibroblasts. The drug has been found to be effective for male rats only, as it does not affect female rats or mice.
