This reaction has been shown to be dependent on both the nature of the counterion and irradiation. Trans-1,2-Dicyano-1,2-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)ethene can be used as an efficient ligand for metal ions with high affinity for sulfur.
