N-Dodecanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (NDHL) is a molecule that is activated by receptor binding and lipoxygenase cleavage. It is an acyl chain of 12 carbons, composed of a hydrophobic tail and hydrophilic head. NDHL has been shown to have hemolytic activity against some bacterial strains, such as S. typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, and Shigella sonnei. NDHL inhibits protein synthesis in the wild type strain of influenza virus A/Puerto Rico/8/34 and in a virulent mutant of influenza virus A/WSN/33 which has reduced susceptibility to NDHL.
