1(2H)-Naphthalenone is a natural compound that inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. Studies have shown that 1(2H)-naphthalenone causes significant cytotoxicity and proapoptotic effects in squamous carcinoma cells, which are human tumor cells derived from the epithelium lining the respiratory tract and upper aerodigestive tract. The enantiomer form of 1(2H)-naphthalenone has been shown to be more potent than the racemic mixture in inducing apoptosis. The acetate extract of lettuce containing 1(2H)-naphthalenone exhibits antiproliferative activity against cervical cancer cells in tissue culture.
