It prevents the activation of the oxytocin receptor by binding to it, thereby blocking the effects of oxytocin on the heart and other organs. L-371,257 has been shown to have a protective effect in animal models of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. In humans, L-371,257 has been shown to inhibit ventricular myocyte apoptosis induced by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) or beta-adrenergic stimulation. L-371,257 also prevents atosiban-induced pancreatic dysfunction in mice.
