(S)-3,5-Dihydroxylphenylglycine is a neurotransmitter that is found in the brain. It is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which means it blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase and increases the levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in neurons. This leads to increased neuronal activity and has been shown to have neuroprotective effects. 3,5-Dihydroxylphenylglycine has also been shown to be protective against glutamate toxicity and mitochondrial membrane potential disruption by 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2APB). The compound has also been shown to prevent damage to fetal bovine erythrocytes by camp levels activated with calcium ionophore A23187. In addition, 3,5-dihydroxylphenylglycine causes a decrease in platelet aggregation and prevents neuronal death induced by constant pressure or oxygen deprivation.
