Description

3-Methoxy-2'-biphenylacetic acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of 2,4-diaminobiphenyl. It can be prepared by catalytic ethylation of 3-hydroxybiphenyl with ethylene chlorohydrin. The reaction is carried out in hexane and the product is isolated as an acid ethyl ester. 3-Methoxy-2'-biphenylacetic acid can also be obtained by reacting 3,5-dimethoxyphenol with phosphorus tribromide in boron trichloride at 0°C. The chloride ion reacts with the methoxy group to form a salt, which is hydrolyzed to give the free acid.
