L-Idaric acid 1,4-lactone is a synthetic glycosylidic sugar that can be modified with fluorine compounds to create a variety of derivatives. It is used as a monomer in the synthesis of oligosaccharides, polysaccharides, and complex carbohydrates. L-Idaric acid 1,4-lactone can also be synthesized from methyl erythritol tetraacetate and glycerol in the presence of acetic anhydride.
