5-(Bromomethyl)-2-phenylpyridine (5-BMP) is a heterocyclic organic compound. It is a colorless solid that can be obtained by reacting 2-bromopyridine with methyl bromide in the presence of sodium hydride. The molecule has an asymmetric center at the carbon atom adjacent to the bromine atom, and thus exists as two optical isomers: 5-(bromomethyl)-2-phenylpyridine and 5-(methylthiomethyl)-2-phenylpyridine. The crystal structure of 5-BMP was determined by X-ray diffraction, which showed that it adopts a conformation that is similar to those of other substituted pyridines. This conformation can be described as "axial".
5-BMP has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against Gram negative bacteria, such as Salmonella typhimur
