1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate is a quaternary ammonium salt that belongs to the class of imidazolium salts. It has been shown to be useful for the production of polymers, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate is stable in acidic conditions and can be used as a solvent for organic synthesis. The viscosity of this compound can be altered by changing the concentration of water or by adding an electrolyte such as hydrochloric acid. It has been shown that 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate is not toxic in animal models at concentrations up to 5000 mg/kg.
