Podocarpus is a genus of coniferous trees in the family Podocarpaceae. The genus contains about 20 species, which are found in Asia and North America. Podocarpus plants have been used as medicinal herbs for centuries in China and Japan. A variety of bioactive compounds have been isolated from the leaves, bark, roots and fruit of this plant. One such compound is 7,15-dihydroxypodocarp-8(14)-en-13-one (DHP), which has shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against a number of bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
