This compound has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells by affecting their cell cycle. 2,5,6,7-Tetrahydro-4H-indazol-4-one also binds to nucleophilic groups in cells and inhibits DNA synthesis. In particular, it inhibits the binding of ethylene and chloride ions to DNA in epithelial carcinoma cells. 2,5,6,7-Tetrahydro-4H-indazol-4-one also possesses antiherpetic activity against herpes simplex virus due to its ability to interfere with viral replication by inhibiting protein synthesis and interfering with the DNA polymerase process.
