Methyl 2,3:4,6-di-O-benzylidene-a-D-mannopyranoside is a cyclic peptide that was developed for the treatment of tropical diseases. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of protein synthesis and an absorber of amino acids in experimental infections. Comparative studies have shown that this drug inhibits protein synthesis more than other cyclic peptides. Methyl 2,3:4,6-di-O-benzylidene-a-D-mannopyranoside has also been shown to have antiinflammatory properties in inflammatory bowel disease and may be useful as a therapeutic agent for Alzheimer’s disease or cancer.
