Sialic acid aldolase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of sialic acid to generate D-glyceraldehyde and pyruvate. It is a tetramer with two active sites per subunit, and has been shown to have high affinity for metal ions such as zinc, manganese, and nickel. Sialic acid aldolase has been shown to be involved in the process optimization of chemical reactions, as well as in human pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori and Hl-60 cells. Sialic acid aldolase is also known to have hydroxyl group on its side chain, which may lead to cell lysis through polymerization. This enzyme also has electrochemical properties that can be used for detection purposes.
