It inhibits the activity of DNA polymerase, which is essential for DNA replication. 3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxy-5'-O-toluoyluridine also inhibits ribonucleotide reductase, which is essential for RNA synthesis. This drug has been shown to be effective against herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). 3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxy-5'-O-toluoyluridine has been shown to be active against a number of tumor cell lines in vitro and in vivo, including breast cancer cells.
