This molecule is reactive and has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of DNA synthesis in vivo assays. The use of 5'-azido-5'-deoxyguanosine has been explored as a potential treatment for leishmaniasis, a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani.
